"Glass Sword" by Victoria Aveyard Review

23174274

Book: Glass Sword

Author: Victoria Aveyard

My Rating: ★★★ 1/2

Synopsis: If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.
(Don't even get me started on the problems I have with this synopsis)

Going to be honest, coming into this book, I did not have the highest of expectations. I read "Red Queen" when it originally came out, and loved it, but when "Glass Sword" came out, almost everyone who I follow did not rate this book so high, so I was a little skeptical of reading this. I put it off for a while, but I finally picked it up. That being said...

I was disappointed. I did not like this book even remotely as much as the first book, and I think my main problem was Mare. I hated Mare with a burning passion throughout this book. I don't know what happened, but she suddenly became this cold bitch with a "mightier than thou" attitude. I cannot tell you how many times she tried to invalidate someone else or say "I am the lightning girl, I am more important" or some bullshit along those lines. At this point, I would lowkey be okay with her dying because she is just getting on my damn nerves. She needs to get over herself. I don't why she suddenly felt she was the most important person in the whole damn universe, but she isn't, and I need her to realize that.

When it comes to the other characters, for the most part I liked them a lot more than her, though I finally understand why people say they are like the "X-Men". Watching them get newbloods was exactly like watching the "X-Men" gather, down to the power types.

Maven... even though we didn't really see him that much in the book, he is fucking crazy. I don't know what his issue is and why he is doing everything he is, but I just need him to die already because his obsession with Mare is creepy. Though, I suppose they are perfect for each other since they are both "mightier than everyone" in their heads.

Cal... I still love him. In the beginning of the book, I wanted him to get together with Mare, but now that I've read the book completely, I don't want that to happen. He deserves so much better than Mare. And based off the way she can't let go of Maven, who I think is cuckoo for cocoa puffs, I don't think Cal is her first choice in this effed up love square.

Speaking of the love square, I felt so bad for Kilorn. Mare kept treating him like a piece of shit and saying that he was just a "lowly fisherman", but clearly he was a lot more than that. She only talked to him when no one else would talk to her, and he too deserves better than that.

Let's see, plot-wise, it felt rather slow and nothing really important until towards the end. For the most part I saw everything coming, though there were a few things that happened that I figured would happen, just not as they happened. I'm going to continue the series just because I want to see what happens next, but this book was definitely not nearly as good as the first one in every regard. I'm hoping the next one is better.

  3. I didn't enjoy Red Queen but I'm still willing to give this a shot. But if you liked the first book and didn't enjoy this... Doesn't bode well for those of us who didn't get on with it! I was really hoping things would pick up and improve - especially the characters because they were all so annoying in the first book.
